First aid

Box Sichern.jpg
1. Stay calm

Bats are not dangerous – they just want to get back outside.

2. Lights off, windows open

Open the windows wide and move curtains aside.
Switch off the lights.

3. Give it time and space

Allow the animal to calm down and regain its strength.
In most cases, the bat will find its way out on its own.

4. Remove pets from the room

Please take them out immediately!

5. Close the door

This keeps the bat in one room, making it easier for it to find the way out.

6. If the bat is on the floor, wall, or curtain…

First aid for exhausted bats: Do not touch with bare hands!
If the bat is sitting weakly on the floor, wall, or curtain, you can carefully place it in a small box with fork-sized air holes and a dish towel inside.
Ideally, add a slightly moistened paper towel in one corner of the box.
Always wear thick gloves and/or use a cloth to gently move it into the prepared box. (See photo)
Then, contact a local bat rescue group or wildlife center as soon as possible. You’re also welcome to call us – we are available 24/7!

Help out!

Do you want to help?

Every year we care for around 600 bats throughout Austria that come to us weakened and/or injured.

The aim of our care is to rehabilitate the patients as quickly as possible so that they can hunt outdoors at night again in accordance with their natural behavior.

However, there are always cases in which a longer hospital stay is necessary, for example when there is major damage to the flight membranes. We rely on donations to maintain our volunteer-run bat shelter.

Our work

Animal shelter

The Austrian Bat Station is a non-profit organization. We are a team of volunteer animal keepers, veterinarians, biologists as well as many others who are dedicated to helping our native bats.

injured or orphaned bat. With our accumulated knowledge and experience, which we have acquired over years of collaboration with the previous bat station at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna (VUW), we can guarantee the best possible care for these special animals. The station at the VUW was responsible for caring for bats from 2005 to 2021. The Austrian Zoological Society for Animal and Species Protection generously provided a spacious workroom where we’ve created an animal shelter specifically for bats.

Care

Our work includes everything from giving advice via telephone to securing found animals, rehabilitating them, and releasing them back at the location where

they were found, as well as many sleepless nights during the baby season (bats are mammals and their pups need special milk every 2 hours - even at night). The goal of our work is to rehabilitate the patients as quickly as possible so that they can return to their natural habitat and life. However, there are always cases in which a longer stay in the station is necessary, such as in the case of major damage to the wing membranes. In isolated cases, after long-term care, it might become apparent that an animal can no longer survive independently in the wild due to its disability. We are able to provide a forever home for disabled animals that are able to have a high quality of life despite their disability. Under close veterinary watch, they are able to live with other mates and provide company for many incoming patients. Photo note: Please always handle bats with gloves; our keepers are vaccinated against rabies and our pups know us well.

Vision

We hope to fix the poor reputation bats have and clear up persistent rumors and preconceived notions.

Through our educational work (e.g. lectures, events, school tours), we

want to share the stories of these incredible animals and of how exciting and useful they are for the world.

Don’t just look away! CALL US!
