Bats rarely get sick"

Bats seem to have an immune system that allows them to host many viruses without becoming seriously ill or showing severe symptoms of illness.

Rabies: The only serious zoonotic disease associated with bats.Austria has been considered rabies-free since 2008 (rabies from bats is considered a separate infection). From 2006-2023, over 1,750 deceased bats were examined for lyssaviruses in Austria by the AGES (Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety), all with negative results. The first detection of bat rabies in Austria was in September 2023 in a Serotine bat. Since bat rabies does exist in our country, all bats that unfortunately die while in care are sent to AGES for further testing. People who are particularly exposed (such as bat keepers) must be immunized against rabies. In most cases, a glove or tea towel protects against a bite. If a bite does occur: Contact a doctor immediately, call 1450 or the AGES rabies advice center. https://www.ages.at/mensch/krankheit/oeffentliche-gesundheit-services/tollwutberatungsstelle
